The Director of Coding - Inpatient Coding Services will work with the executive leadership team to design the offshore services delivery model, develop capabilities, and grow Access Healthcare’s inpatient coding business. This position will work alongside our sales and client service leaders to grow the business. She / He will build the leadership team for the service line and manage ongoing operations while lending subject matter expertise to the team.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide inpatient coding subject matter expertise

    • Develop and implement the product/offering strategy and operational plan for IP Coding, including but not limited to staffing, training, and roll out Serve as a subject matter expert and manage the content of the business

    • Respond to, and resolve complex coding situations in the inpatient coding practice

    • Provide advice to internal and external stakeholders as and when required

    • Design internal processes for Inpatient coding that will enable feedback to Providers resulting in documentation improvement

  • Stay updated on Medical Coding practices and trends

    • Apply knowledge of coding principles, procedures, and market trends to keep the coding team up-to-date

    • Track ongoing legislative and coding changes that could impact operational performance or strategic direction of the coding program

    • Enable the delivery team to maintain consistently high standards and drive overall knowledge base of the team

    • Research on coding trends, issues, changes in healthcare regulations and technology, and analyze the impact on existing coding practices

    • Implement changes to coding process and system configurations to ensure compliance with the dynamic coding practice

  • Coding related queries

    • Manage discrepancies that arise during data verification process

    • Discuss coding issues and questions with the delivery team, present the solution, and educate coders on how to handle the various complex situations in the coding practice

  • Hiring and Training the coding team

    • Assist with the hiring and on-boarding of the new inpatient coders to the team

    • Take ownership of the organization’s coding team certification goals by preparing and mentoring the coders for the different certification programs

    • Provide ongoing training requirements to learning and development team and share the feedback on the training programs conducted by them

    • Focus on achieving coding excellence through training

  • Responsible for Operations and Quality Management

    • Oversee the inpatient coding operations

    • Review quarterly audit findings, identify areas of improvements, and focus on education and re-training requirements

    • Work with coding managers to address the issues, identify the requirements and improvement areas, and review performance of the coding practice

    • Assist with the development and delivery of coding education related to coding guidelines, updates, technology changes, compliance and regulatory updates

    • Support achievement of process-specific quality objectives through analysis of error trends and patterns, identifying knowledge gaps, and addressing them through remedial training interventions

  • Provide Thought Leadership

    • Proven ability to act as a knowledge leader for inpatient coding services delivery Participate in developing thought leadership and showcase examples

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Strong knowledge of inpatient coding practice along with applicable certifications

  • Experience with working and developing offshore delivery models

  • Experience of working across medical specialties, transition and operations is required Extensive knowledge of coding systems and in-depth knowledge of medical terminologies, diagnosis, medical documentation, and other relevant areas of medical coding

  • Up-to-date knowledge of medical coding trends, guidelines, healthcare regulations, compliance requirements, and other directives for inpatient coding

  • Experience in providing coding consultation, documentation requirements, query resolution, decision-making in case of discrepancies, and coding education

  • Strong ability to interpret medical records and patient documentation across specialties

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities/abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with a healthy interest to teach and learn, ability to listen and willingness to lead by example

  • Strong problem-solving skills to manage complex situations, and to manage cross-functional teams

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to analyze large operational data

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & LICENSURE

  • Minimum requirement of bachelor’s degree in related discipline or equivalent experience required.

  • Must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in medical coding processes in various specialties and a significant portion of it with training and onboarding new services for existing and new clients

  • Must have experience leading teams with parallel objectives to meet the organization’s needs for the coding efficiency across a variety of clients/accounts

  • Must have 5 years’ experience in inpatient coding practice

  • Certifications in coding from AHIMA/AAPC with one or more of the following credentials such as CIC, CCS, CPC
